In recent years,
YouTube Music
has emerged as a fierce competitor to
Spotify
and
Apple Music
. If you’re willing to transfer your playlists, it could easily become your go-to
music streaming platform
, especially if you already subscribe to
YouTube Premium
and have access to it. Now, YouTube Music’s latest update aims to enhance its music listening experience even further.
Google has recently added two new quality-of-life improvements to YouTube Music: Consistent Volume and Lyric Sharing. As the name implies, Consistent Volume focuses on managing audio levels that can randomly spike between different songs, genres, and content types. You’ve likely experienced wild volume fluctuations if you’ve listened to two different song genres back to back or switched from a song to a podcast. This new feature will help prevent those issues and protect your ears.
Consistent Volume is rolling out on iOS and Android now, and the changelog for the update states the feature will “normalize volume across tracks.” Once you have the latest YouTube Music update, you will need to enable consistent volume in the settings. To do this, go to Settings > Playback & Restrictions and activate Consistent Volume.

YouTube Music
Google’s flagship music streaming platform, which primarily competes with services including Spotify and Apple Music.

Lyric sharing is coming to YouTube Music
The feature is currently only available to some users
Additionally, a new lyric sharing feature has begun rolling out on YouTube Music, allowing users to share song lyrics from the app. The feature is currently only available to a select group of users and has not been widely rolled out yet. According to Android Authority, it’s possible that the feature isn’t part of an update but is instead a server-side change that will gradually be available to more users.
The introduction of the lyric sharing feature was first spotted by users on Reddit. If it’s available to you, you’ll find it under the Lyrics tab while listening to a song. From there, select the lyrics you want to highlight, tap next, choose a background color, and then tap Share.
It’s great to see more features coming to YouTube Music. However, it’s still missing several other features that Spotify and Apple Music offer, such as proper social integrations to follow friends and a higher audio bitrate. In March, YouTube announced that YouTube Music and Premium have collectively reached over 125 million subscribers (including trials) worldwide. But that’s still behind Spotify, which has 263 million subscribers.
