I called the police after I saw a petrol car parked in an electric vehicle charging spot – was I in the wrong?

A FRUSTRATED motorist has taken to the internet to ask if they are in the wrong for calling the police.

After spotting a petrol Audi parked in an electric car charging space, the EV driver called the cops to get it moved.

Taking to Reddit, the US motorist explained: “I had to drive 1.5hrs to a specialist vet for my dog.

“I drained the battery in my electric car I found 3 charging locations near me, 1 at a mall, 1 at a AAA business center thing, and 3 at a local cafe.

“The mall was all being used, AAA was broken and when I pulled up to the Cafe there was a gas Audi parked in the spot.

“I googled my states law and it states…It is unlawful for a person to stop, stand, or park a vehicle that is not capable of using an electrical recharging station within any parking space specifically designated for charging an electric vehicle.”

With not enough battery level left to find another charger, the motorist made an effort to get the Audi moved.

They continued: “I called the non-emergency line to complain, I even asked two workers if they knew whose car it was, they didn’t know.

“I waited in the closest spot hoping police or owner of said car would do something.

“Cop shows up comes over to me and says ‘There is no law for this so why did you call me?’ I showed him the above quoted statue and he says ‘I have to look this up.’

“The owner comes out yelling at me that it’s his car and he paid $1500 to install that and if he wants to park there he will and I need to get off his property or he will hit me with trespassing.”

The Reddit user explained that this wasn’t the case and that the Audi owner was in the wrong.

They went on: “this was not a free charge while you eat/shop kind of thing.

“Cop comes out to say that I am right, it is illegal to block the spot and he also cannot ask me to leave because I am paying for the spot and I have a contract with ChargePoint the actual owner of the charger.”

The Reddit user asked people if they were in the wrong after the Audi owner didn’t get a ticket: “The owner did not get a ticket for parking in the spot because the cop felt it was ‘up to his discretion’ to decide.”

One Reddit user replied: “This guy was breaking the law and you properly reported it to the non-emergency line. Although, why the hell is this dude parking in a pay-to-charge space he is leasing outside his Cafe? I’m assuming he gets something out having it there.”

Another said: “Seems like he installed that charging space just to keep a prime spot for himself. You were completely in the right to call them.”

While another pointed out: “There’s a good chance the employees knew it was their boss’ Audi and just didn’t want to admit it.

“He probably would’ve never came out if he hadn’t seen you got an officer involved.”
