Ten years ago, Google launched Google Fit, a platform that provided various APIs for a wide range of apps focused on health.
Now it is clear that Google Fit is being shut down, as Google wants to focus on the similar platform Android Health instead.
According to a post on the Android Developers Blog, developers will have until 30 June 2025 to replace the APIs in question.
“Android Health’s mission is to enable billions of Android users to be healthier through access, storage, and control of their health, fitness, and safety data.” said Google at its I/O 2024 developer conference.
One of the key updates coming in the future relates to Wear OS 5. The Health Services set of APIs will include two new features:
- New data types for running
- Support for debounced goals
This primarily means that smartwatches running on the Wear OS 5 operating system will provide more insightful data for runners such as Ground Contact Time, Stride Length, Vertical Oscillation and Vertical Ratio.
