The Tesla Model 3 has been dubbed as the efficiency king by U.K-based motoring publication What Car? after a full range test. The automotive firm came to the conclusion after it conducted a test involving the Tesla Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) and 11 other electric cars from several price ranges.
What Car?‘s lineup of vehicles was interesting as it included 11 new electric cars and one nine-year-old Tesla Model S with over 250,000 miles on the odometer. The test itself was simple, as it only involved fully charging the vehicles and running them until they ran out of battery. The efficiency of each vehicle in the test was then evaluated.
Based on What Car?‘s range test results, the Tesla Model 3 RWD proved to be the most efficient electric car among the EVs that were tested. While the vehicle only traveled 255 miles, the base all-electric sedan averaged an impressive 4.4 miles per kWh. This contrasts greatly with the results of the Audi Q6 e-tron Launch Edition, which averaged 3.0 miles per kWh.
What Car? estimated that with these efficiency figures in mind, drivers could spend roughly £508 on electricity every 10,000 miles in the Model 3, versus £745 in the Q6 e-tron, as noted in a Car Dealer Magazine UK report. Steve Huntingford, editor at What Car?, noted that efficiency matters a lot now considering the rise in energy prices.
“Only a few years ago, when electricity was cheap, and any electric car cost far less to run than an equivalent petrol or diesel model, efficiency didn’t seem to matter that much. However, with energy prices high and due to rise further, it’s now an important consideration,” the What Car? editor noted.
Quite interestingly, the nine-year-old Tesla Model S actually outlasted two of the brand new electric cars in What Car?‘s test. While the vehicle already has over 250,000 miles on its odometer, it was still able to travel a respectable 213 miles, beating the Peugeot e-308 SW and the Mini Cooper SE, which traveled 212 and 211 miles, respectively.
