Transportation cabinet alerting motorists of planned traffic switch on Donaldson road in Erlanger Saturday – User-generated content

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is advising Northern Kentucky motorists of an upcoming traffic switch on Donaldson Highway (KY 236) in Boone County on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Traffic will shift to the newly paved northern portion of the road between Mineola Pike (KY 3076) (mile point 1.64) and Turfway Road (KY 717) (mile point 0.81), a distance of 0.83 miles. Message boards have been placed throughout the project area to warn motorists of the upcoming traffic switch.

Crews will begin the traffic switch Saturday morning, and are expected to have traffic in its new configuration from Mineola Pike to Turfway Road by 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5. This work is being performed Saturday morning to mitigate traffic disruptions, as this area sees the lowest amount of traffic during this period of time.

This traffic switch will include flaggers on both sides of the work zone. Crews will stripe the pavement on Donaldson Highway, and its intersections with Mineola Pike and South Airfield Road.

Once the traffic switch has been completed, motorists should expect two 10-foot lanes (one lane in each direction), with a two-foot shoulder on each side.

KYTC District 6 will release further information about additional traffic impacts associated with this project in the coming weeks.

Project Background: a widening and safety improvement project on Donaldson Highway between Houston Road (KY 842) and Mineola Pike began March 2023. The project includes widening a two-mile stretch of road to five lanes with curb and gutter, including two through-lanes in each direction with a center turn lane. A sidewalk and shared-use path will also be added.

“Currently Donaldson Highway experiences bouts of congestion from several businesses, schools, residentials and commercial development in the area.” said Bob Yeager, Chief District Engineer of KYTC’s District 6 Office. “This project will help mitigate congestion, provide better access for pedestrians and overall improve safety,” he said.

The $33.2 million project was awarded to Riegler Blacktop of Florence. The project has a completion date of September 2025.
