EU votes in favor of high taxes on Chinese electric cars – EnergyWatch

EU parliamentarians voted on Friday to impose high tariff barriers on imports of Chinese electric cars, anonymous sources told Bloomberg News.

The tariffs can go as high as 45%, and with a positive vote, the EU Commission can now begin phasing in the tariffs, which according to the sources will be in effect for five years.

According to the sources, a number of countries’ representatives abstained from the vote because high tariffs could increase trade tensions between Europe and China.

According to Bloomberg News, China has threatened to raise tariffs on cars, dairy products and pork from Europe, among other products.
