Week of September 30 Morning News Ratings: GMA Enjoys Demo Gains in Week 2 of New Season

The second week of the 2023-2024 TV season saw ABC News’ Good Morning America once again in the top position with total viewers. Meanwhile, NBC News’ Today—which in recent weeks has put up a spirited battle to unseat its rival—took second place in that category, but remained No. 1 with the advertiser-coveted Adults 25-54 demo.

During the week of Sept. 30, the total viewer gap between GMA and Today was 51,000 viewers. In the demo, GMA widened its second place finish over CBS Mornings to 77,000 viewers.

Despite being at the center of online discourse due to a tense interview between co-anchor Tony Dokoupil and author Ta-Naheisi Coates, the CBS morning show was the only one of the three to register declines in both measured categories.

According to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen, GMA averaged 2.618 million total viewers and 456,000 A25-54 viewers for the week. Compared to the previous week, it dipped -1% in the former category, but ticked up by +3% in the latter—the only morning show to see week-to-week demo growth.

Compared to the same week in 2023 (the week of Oct. 2), GMA saw steeper declines of -15% in total viewers and -32% in the demo.

Today saw 2.567 million total viewers and 670,000 A25-54 viewers for the week, which translates into a decline of -1% and a flat result, respectively. Year-to-year, the show was down by -6% in total viewers and -4% in the demo.

CBS Mornings brought in 1.991 million total viewers and 379,000 demo viewers. Compared to the previous week, it was down by -5% and -1%, respectively. Looking back at 2023, CBS Mornings saw losses of -9% in total viewers and -12% in the demo.
