MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 Stays Big, Doubles Down On AI

MediaTek’s new Dimensity 9400 chip is made for flagship smartphones, and will launch on October 9, 2024. The chip is faster and uses less power than the older Dimensity 9300, and also 35% better at handling individual tasks. Here’s all we know about it.

The Dimensity 9400 chip is quicker and better at AI tasks than predecessor

The Dimensity 9400 chip uses a design with one high-performance core (the Arm Cortex-X925) running at over 3.62GHz, along with three other high-power Cortex-X4 cores and four more efficient Cortex-A720 cores. Compared to the previous Dimensity 9300, it’s better by 35% in single-core performance, and multi-core performance by 28%.

It’s also more efficient, using up to 40% less power, thanks to being built with a more advanced second-gen three nanometer technology from TSMC.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9400 will continue furthering our mission to be the enablers of Al, supporting powerful applications that anticipate users’ needs and adapt to their preferences, while also fueling generative Al technology with on-device LoRA training and video generation.

What’s also impressive is the upgrades for generative AI. The chip supports on-device LoRA training, which means apps can learn and improve directly on your phone. Your virtual assistant can get better at understanding your voice commands without needing to send your data to the cloud, so the processing time is faster and more private. With Agentic AI, apps can also do tasks on their own. For example they’ll learn your usage pattern and make recommendations to improve performance.

Dimensity 9400 brings gaming improvement & smarter home automation

MediaTek is teaming up with developers to create a unified interface that connects AI agents, third-party APKs, and models. You’ll be seeing the likes of smart home apps that use an AI agent to control various other devices and manage complex automation routines more quickly.

On the gaming side, the Dimensity 9400 is the best chip you could ask for. It uses the powerful 12-core Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU, and players should expect up to 40% faster ray tracing performance compared to previous generations. That means more realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections.

The manufacturer also says the chip supports opacity micromaps (OMM), which are realistic foliage, water surfaces, and basically mimics environments as they would appear in real life.

There’s the presence of the Imagiq 1090 technology, which lets you record HDR video no matter how much you zoom in or out of a scene or subject. It also aids the camera in using 14% less power when recording 4K video at 60 frames per second (fps).

Blazing-fast 5G and Wi-Fi for all your devices

More features the Dimension 9400 brings to the table is an updated modem that supports 4CC-CA (four-carrier aggregation), allowing the chipset to combine multiple 5G frequency bands. Added to a performance capability of up to 7 Gbps on sub-6GHz networks, you’ll experience significantly faster downloads and uploads.

There’s also the MediaTek Xtra Range 3.0 that improves Wi-Fi coverage by up to 30 meters beyond typical ranges, especially in larger homes or offices where distance from the router can be an issue. Smartphones using the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 will be available in stores starting in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The upcoming Oppo Find X8 Pro, Vivo X200 and X200 Plus, and iQOO Neo 10 Pro phones are among them. There are also rumors that Samsung may use the chip in its Galaxy S25 series, following their switch to the Dimensity 9300+ for the Tab S10 series.
