The study also reported Temple had cheaper premiums than most cities. It’s reported monthly premium was $158.72 and its annual premium was $1,905.

Dallas had the highest reported monthly premium at $218.89. Houston and San Antonio were also reported to have some of the highest rates, with the report finding that drivers in major metropolitan areas tend to pay about 7% more for insurance.

While the report indicated Killeen insurance is cheaper compared to other cities, it has still risen significantly in recent years. The report from InsuranceQuotes indicated that Texas insurance rates have increased by 46.5% over the past five years.

Lizette Bermudez, the store manager at A-MAX Auto Insurance’s downtown Killeen location, said the InsuranceQuotes report was inconsistent when compared to what she has seen in Killeen. She has seen rates rising over the past three years and premiums surpassing $200 a month.

A-MAX Auto Insurance, a Dallas-based company, has two locations in Killeen. One is in downtown Killeen at 908 N. Gray St. and the other is at 2511 Trimmier Road, Ste. 200.

Bermudez cited recent weather events as being one of the main cause of rising rates in Killeen, saying, “We’ve had weather situations in the past.” She specifically mentioned the snowstorm a few years back along with the tornadoes and hail that occurred in Bell County in the spring as factors that increase the risk for insurers.

She did agree that rates in Killeen are cheaper when compared to big cities like Austin and Dallas. “Remember, we’re a small town,” she said, adding that there are less accidents in Killeen than in larger cities.

Bermudez said sex, age, vehicle age and type plus zip code were the biggest factors in determining premiums. She indicated that drivers 25 and under along with drivers 65 and older pay the highest premiums. More valuable vehicles also result in higher premiums.
