Wheeler Dealers' Mike Brewer calls out Keir Starmer over Labour EV plan – Express

Speaking to Car Dealer Podcast Live, Mike said: “This is not my world, this EV world.

“Labour has just pledged they are going to build one million homes over the next five years.

“They are building 6,000 new homes just on the edge of my town. I live in Warwick.

“There isn’t one electric charger going in the driveway. That is policy number one, isn’t it?

“If Labour are going to pledge to build one million new homes, every home should have an electric charging point. I don’t know if that’s law?

“I’ve discussed it with people who have come into our site to buy a nice car because there are no electric charging points on their driveway.”

Despite Mike’s claims, it appears new rules are in place for the installation of electric car charge points at homes.

From June 2022, all newly built homes in England must have electric car charging points installed due to Part S building regulation rules.

This should see the number of plugs soar in the coming years with a target of around 145,000 cables activated every year.

However, some motorists took to online forum, Speak EV, to claim their housing developer had not installed a plug despite the new rules.

One user stressed builders had only decided to provide the electrics to install a plug instead.

According to experts at WePowerYourCar, this is only mandatory if properties “have an associated parking space”.

It means those owning flats or apartments will not benefit from the same rules in a major blow.

This likely means these residents will have to rely on public charging bays to top-up, costing them more in the long run.

Owners will pay just five percent VAT if they choose to charge an electric car battery at home compared to 20 percent on the street.
