HUAWEI’s long-anticipated HarmonyOS Next is set to make its commercial debut on October 22, a date that also aligns with the rumored launch of the Nova 13 series. This marks a significant milestone for HUAWEI’s software ecosystem, as the company moves forward with its own operating system, completely independent of Android.
A Break from Android
Unlike previous versions of HarmonyOS, HarmonyOS Next will abandon the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and drop support for Android applications. Instead, HUAWEI is building its OS from the ground up, using its in-house microkernel operating system based on the OpenHarmony open-source core. This change is set to give users a more unified and secure experience, tailored specifically for HUAWEI devices.
To support this transition, HUAWEI has been hard at work building a robust app ecosystem. Reports suggest that HarmonyOS Next will launch with over 10,000 apps and services, many of which were developed with the help of the Ark Compiler and HUAWEI Mobile Services (HMS). While visually similar to the current HarmonyOS, the new version is designed to function seamlessly without the need to run Android apps, focusing entirely on its self-developed platform.
