Multiple abandoned cars left sitting at Springfield-Branson National Airport for years – KY3

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3)—For years, Multiple abandoned cars have sat at the Springfield-Branson National Airport.

Kent Boyd with the Springfield-Branson National Airport said they ran the tags on one of the vehicles and discovered something odd.

“We were able to trace back, and we found an obituary for the registered owner,” Boyd said. “We contacted the estate and asked if they can please come get this car and they still haven’t.”

He said they encountered the abandoned vehicles when airport leaders started repaving the parking lot not long ago. Boyd said they found around 25 abandoned cars, some sitting for three to four years.

We asked what airport leaders plan on doing with the abandoned vehicles if no one ends up claiming them.

“At some point, we’ll tow them. I don’t know what that timeline is. You don’t want to tow them or get them off the property too early because you know sure as heck as soon as you do that, somebody will show up looking for it,” he said.

We also asked about what ended up happening to the cars that caught on fire in the short-term parking lot back in September. Boyd said the owners were found, the cars were removed, and the parking lot has since been fixed.
