OxygenOS 15 will bring a lot of AI features to OnePlus devices

Artificial intelligence is shaping the present and future of the tech industry. Google was a pioneer in seriously betting on AI in mobile devices, developing several new features and collaborating with Samsung to develop Galaxy AI. Now, OnePlus has confirmed that OxygenOS 15 will bring some new AI features and has renamed its suite.

“OnePlus AI” will be the name of the brand’s AI-powered features in OxygenOS 15. While it’s not a particularly original name, it gets right to the point with what it offers. In recent big OxygenOS updates, the brand had used some somewhat extravagant names, such as “Aquamorphic Design” or “Trinity Engine,” to describe the improvements. Perhaps OnePlus realized that it went a bit too far and has decided to opt for more natural or conventional descriptions.

AI-powered features coming to OnePlus devices with OxygenOS 15

According to OnePlus, OxygenOS 15 will primarily focus on three key areas: AI, speed, and a visual overhaul. The company offered a preview of the AI-based features they are working on. Like other brands, OnePlus is betting heavily on generative AI for features related to advanced image editing.

First up is AI Detail Boost, a feature that recovers lost details in pictures. AI Reflection Eraser is another tool that naturally eliminates unwanted reflections from surfaces like windows and others. Additionally, AI Unblur is quite explicit in what it does from its very name, yielding sharper images. These features are not especially unique, as we have seen equivalents from other brands. However, it is always good to have competition in the segment to drive the improvement of similar options.

The OnePlus AI suite in OxygenOS 15 also includes AI-recommended replies and AI Notes. As with other recent Android devices, Gemini will serve as the native voice assistant. The company is also utilizing AI to create a system known as Intelligent Search. The latter lets you quickly find content across settings, files, and Notes in one place. There’s even a Pass Scan feature for digitizing physical documents.

On-device AI processing seems mostly missing

Interestingly, most (or all) of the AI-powered features will be cloud-based. This raises questions about the true usefulness of AndesGPT, the AI model developed for BBK-related brands. OnePlus, OPPO, and other companies are reportedly integrating the model into their new flagship phones. However, there are no features yet that showcase its on-device AI processing capabilities.
