Google is adding Gemini to Workspace Gmail on the web

Gmail on the Web in Google Workspace is getting Gemini AI. Google is adding a new feature called “Help Me Write”, and consolidating the “Refine My Draft” feature in Gmail, which will help certain users draft and polish their emails.

Gemini AI is now part of Gmail on the web in Google Workspace

Google has been actively infusing the power of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) in its products, services, and platforms. Google’s Gemini AI is now helping several users refine and improve their work. The Gen AI is proving indispensable for completing or even automating mundane tasks.

Moving forward, Gmail for the web will have the power of Gemini AI. A few months ago, Google introduced the “Help me write” and “Refine my draft” tools on Gmail’s mobile app. As the names of the features indicate, Gemini AI helps Gmail users write an email and improve a drafted email.

Now Gmail for the web, or the version of Gmail that works on desktop computers via a web browser, will gain the same features. According to a Google Workspace blog post, the web versions of the “Help Me Write” and “Refine My Draft” tools are identical to the mobile version.

Google has essentially extended the power of its Gemini Gen AI to Gmail for the web. The AI writing assistant will reportedly allow users to easily craft emails from scratch.

Google includes “Polish” option in Gmail’s mobile and web version

In addition to “Help me write”, Google has also offered a new “Polish” option. This will be available on both web and mobile versions of Gmail.

Google has essentially renamed the “Refine my draft” tool to “Polish”. According to Android Central, the core functions remain the same. Incidentally, the “Refine my draft” shortcut had multiple options such as Polish, Formalize, Elaborate, Shorten, and Write a draft. Google seems to have simplified the tool and integrated all the aforementioned features into one “Polish” option.

The new Refine tool waits for Gmail users to type at least 12 words before attempting to help improve style and clarity. Similar to the web version, Gmail’s app for smartphones now has the “Help me write” shortcut in empty drafts and the “Polish” shortcut for drafts over 12 words.

To use the Polish feature, Gmail for the web users can use the Ctrl+H shortcut. Gmail’s mobile app users can activate it with a quick right swipe.

It is important to note that Google isn’t unlocking the power of Gemini AI to all Gmail users. The new AI tools to better compose emails will be available to Google Workspace users with any one of the Gemini Business and Enterprise add-ons, Gemini Education add-ons, or Google One AI Premium subscriptions.
