The latest figures from the Norwegian road authority OFV do not come close to the 96.4 per cent BEV market penetration seen in September. But the 94 per cent in October, together with a similar result in August, are evidence of a new level reached in Norway: electric cars are the absolute rule, all other drive types are the exception. Over the course of the year, Norway is now approaching a BEV market share of 89 per cent.
Although the absolute number of 10,862 electric cars registered in October is below the September figure (12,495 BEVs, -13%), it is well above the 7,516 units registered in October 2023 (+45%). Across all drive systems, 11,552 new passenger cars were registered in Norway, also a clear increase compared to the same month last year (+29%)
The 10,862 electric cars were joined by 178 new plug-in hybrids (1.5 per cent market share). Full hybrids accounted for 192 vehicles (1.7%), petrol cars for 63 (0.5%) and diesel cars for 257 units (2.2%). No hydrogen cars were registered in Norway in October. Nine units have been registered so far in the whole of 2024.
Looking at the model ranking, the SFO emphasises that all 20 best-selling car models in October were electric cars. “The first car with an internal combustion engine, a small petrol hybrid, appears in 23rd place in the October list,” writes the agency.
Looking at the top ten models, Toyota’s bZ4X takes the top spot this time with 761 registrations, just ahead of the Skoda Enyaq (757). Both therefore have a market share of 6.6 per cent in Norway. They are followed by the Tesla duo Model 3 (696) and Model Y (645). The two cars were the guarantors of the strong September figures in the previous month, as a Tesla shipload arrived in Norway at that time. This logistical component is always strongly reflected in the statistics of the eMobility flagship country.
The Tesla duo was followed in October by the VW ID.4 and the Nissan Ariya (both 642), with the Ford Explorer, the VW ID.7, the Volvo EX30 and the VW ID.3 rounding off the top ten.
