Google TV adds share feature to Android & iOS apps

Google recently rolled out a quiet update to the Google TV app, adding a new feature allowing users to share their favorite movies and TV shows directly. This feature, now live on Android and iOS, lets users send a link to specific content in the app, aiming to make it easier to recommend shows to friends or family. However, only the Google TV app users can fully view the shared content.

Share with a tap on Google TV on Android and iOS

The new feature, spotted by 9to5Google, makes sharing content straightforward. Google TV users on Android can send a link through text, email, or social media by tapping the share button on any movie or show. The recipient receives a direct link, leading them to the specific title on the Google TV app if they have it installed. If the app isn’t installed, the link redirects to either the Google TV website or prompts the user to download the app from the app store, depending on their device.

With the addition of the Google TV share feature for Android and iOS, the app becomes more versatile for fans who want to recommend movies and shows quickly. The update is now live, and users can try out the feature by sharing their favorite content today.

An interesting limitation of this feature is that the shared link requires the recipient to have the Google TV app to access the content. Without it, the link doesn’t provide additional information about the movie or show but redirects to the app store. While this may feel restrictive, it aligns with Google’s goal of growing Google TV’s active user base by ensuring a consistent in-app experience. Android users who already rely on Google TV may find this feature especially convenient.

New feature reflects the growing social experience

The Google TV share feature is another step in the tech giant’s efforts to make content sharing more intuitive. This update also caters to iPhone’s larger user base, potentially encouraging more social interaction around Google TV’s offerings.
