If you wanted to sort your contacts on WhatsApp, you didn’t have many options until now.
You could move rarely used chats to the archive and save frequently contacted people as favourites, but that was about it.
However, a new WhatsApp feature announced by Meta in an official blog post brings more order to chats: Lists. This allows you to finally organise your contacts.
How do Lists work on WhatsApp?
The new function is hidden at the top of WhatsApp. Directly below the search bar, you can select the ‘All’, ‘Unread’ and ‘Favourites’ filters as usual. However, if you swipe slightly to the right, you will also see a plus symbol that you can use to create your own lists and name them as you wish.
You can add people to the list as soon as you create it. If you want to edit or delete a list, simply select it and then briefly hold your finger on the list name to make changes.

Lists can be used, for example, to collect your work contacts separately. Or to have all family members at a glance. You can sort both chats with individuals and group chats into the lists.
Tip: If the chat with a person you want to have in the list is archived, WhatsApp will not show it in the list you have created. You will have to retrieve the chat from the archive first.
When will I get the new WhatsApp Lists feature?
According to Meta, the new feature was made available to the first users on 31 October.
It’s expected to be rolled out to all compatible devices soon, though it’s not clear exactly when. It’s best to check the Google Play Store or iOS App Store on your phone or tablet to see if there is a new version of the app so you don’t miss out.
