US Dept. of Transportation gives $3.1M grant to GUC for pipeline upgrades – WCTI12.com

GREENVILLE, Pitt County —The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation has granted Greenville Utilities Commission (GUC) $3.1 million to upgrade old natural gas pipelines.

Earlier this year, GUC applied for the funding to replace 3.23 miles of outdated steel and plastic pipes, mainly in the west and north parts of Greenville. This upgrade will enhance the safety of GUC’s natural gas system by replacing old infrastructure with modern, safe materials. It will also help lower methane emissions and improve reliability.

“Safety is our main concern. As the natural gas system ages and demand increases, it is crucial to ensure that all parts of the pipeline are safe with current, industry-standard materials,” stated Durk Tyson, Assistant Director of Gas Systems.

As the need for safe and reliable natural gas service grows, projects like this are essential. This initiative not only ensures system safety but also promotes job creation and community investment by expanding capacity for existing industries and attracting larger global companies to the GUC service area.

Planning is currently in progress to use the grant, with construction expected to finish in about three years.
