No one will blame you if you’ve forgotten that Google released a tablet. It was over one and a half years ago, and tablets generally don’t get talked about in public as much (unless you’re Apple). Plus, it’s been quite some time, and we’re yet to hear anything about a successor.
A successor is still coming, in the form of the Pixel Tablet 2, so if you’re one of 10 Pixel Tablet fans, you’ll be glad to know that. However, that’s where the road will end for Google, as the tech giant has reportedly canceled the development of the Pixel Tablet 3. And, it seems it might be moving its efforts to a new device segment.
Google Is Giving Up On Tablets As It Axes Pixel Tablet 3 Development
It was just in May last year that Google released its first-ever tablet attempt, in the form of the Pixel Tablet. However, I’d hardly say that it was a smash hit. It was built more like a smart display that could be detached from its included dock, and not like a standalone tablet. It was only this year that the company gave the option to buy the tablet without the dock.
Well, if for some reason, you were still waiting for the Pixel Tablet 2, worry not. It is going to come at some point next year. However, if you were expecting anything to come after that, that’s where you’re going to be saddened. Sources known to Android Headlines have stated that Google will be killing the Pixel Tablet 3 and potentially writing itself off tablets for good.
That isn’t much of a tragedy, I’d opine, as the Pixel Tablet didn’t even seem like an effort that Google put all of its energy into. In a world where people opt for iPads before anything else, a tablet that’s barely trying to do its job will hardly stand out in the crowd.
Instead, The First Premium Google Pixel Laptop Could Be Upon Us Soon
With the Pixel Tablet 3 dead in the water, it could allow Google to focus its hardware team on some of its existing products… but nope. That’s not the direction the company has chosen to go in. Instead, it will be introducing an entirely new product—one that most Android manufacturers don’t touch.
According to the Android Headlines, Google is working on the first premium Pixel Laptop, and trust me when I say that’s interesting. Sure, the company has its Chromebooks, but from the sound of things, this entry seems set to be a lot more premium and a lot more high-performance. It is reportedly being compared to laptops like the MacBook Pro, Dell XPS, and Microsoft Surface Laptop. Most Chromebooks are much weaker than those.
There is very little chance that this laptop will run on Windows, which I would have liked quite a lot. Instead, it seems this might be one of the first to run on Android—not Chrome OS. The search giant has plans to combine Chrome OS and Android into a unified operating system, and I’d love to see that future.
