In recent years, Google has been working on making the process of migrating from one Android device to another easier. This is key in today’s industry, where a large percentage of users switch phones annually. Now, the company wants to make things even less of a hassle by integrating a Restore Credentials feature for apps into Android.
Android backups include many of the settings and content of your previous phone. While it’s fairly easy and convenient, it still lags behind the data restoration capabilities of Apple devices. For some time now, iPhone users have been able to transfer their experience 1:1 to the new model, including app logins. We are not just talking about saving passwords but also about maintaining the app session even on the new device.
Android’s Restore Credentials feature will transfer your logins in apps too
On Android, while you can transfer your settings and content without issues, you still have to log back into your apps. Google’s Password Manager makes this task less cumbersome by allowing you to enter your login credentials on the login screen with a tap. There are even apps where you can do a quick login as soon as you open it. However, setting your favorite apps still requires opening them all at least once.
Fortunately, Google has realized the problem and developed a neat solution. A new post on the Android developer blog confirms the implementation of Restore Credentials. This feature will include your current app sessions in your Android backup. That is, you can start receiving notifications and use your apps on your new device without having to log in manually or even open them.
Users don’t like having to re-enter login credentials
According to Google, having to re-enter login credentials after changing phones is one of the most common reasons for app abandonment. So, “Restore Credentials” can help developers keep their audience as well. The feature is already available in AOSP, and it is up to developers to implement it. The blog reveals that the implementation does not require much work behind the scenes. The system is linked to the current Android backup tool.
