Forget a search engine: OpenAI could make its own web browser!

Let’s face it, OpenAI was put on this planet to get on Google’s nerves. After launching ChatGPT back in 2022, it’s been giving Google a run for its money in the AI market. OpenAI recently delivered the biggest kick to Google’s shin with the launch of SearchGPT. Well, the San Francisco-based start-up isn’t done picking on the search giant. According to a new report, OpenAI could be considering making its own web browser.

If you’re curious about SearchGPT, this is an AI-powered search engine. It’s similar to what you get with Google’s AI Overviews or Perplexity. When you make a search, you’ll get an AI-generated summary of what you searched for. The search engine will also surface source links pointing to where it got its information from. This feature is available for ChatGPT Plus users, and it will make it to free users soon.

OpenAI could be working on its own web browser

Talk about ambitious! OpenAI is only getting ready to launch its search engine, but we’re already hearing about it working on an entire browser. We don’t have many details about this, so you’ll want to take this information with a grain of salt.

The information comes from people close to the matter, and it says that OpenAI reached out to several companies to help build this application. It reportedly tapped companies like Conde Nast, Everbite, Redfin, and Priceline. We don’t have any visuals of the browser, and we don’t expect to see any for quite some time. However, people close to the matter have seen prototypes and designs for the browser. This pretty much confirms that the company at least has something in production.

This couldn’t come at a worse time for Google

Right now, the U.S. DOJ wants Google to sell off Chrome. Being the biggest search engine in the world, many believe that it’s one of the main reasons why Google is considered an illegal monopoly. The government has Google in its crosshairs, and it wants the company broken up. It pegged Google as a monopoly in the Android app market and search market.

No one knows what will happen if Google has to sell Chrome. Its buyer could continue the browser’s trajectory or run it into the ground. If the latter happens, then OpenAI’s potential browser may have a chance of stealing the market.

Though we don’t know anything about this browser, we know that will have a heavy focus on AI technology. It could provide a better AI experience compared to Chrome. The thing is that Chrome was developed long before the AI era, and adding AI features involves undoing tons of code. OpenAI’s browser could be built from the ground up for AI technology. We can only imagine what sort of experience a browser like that could bring.

OpenAI developed the ChatGPT website, the ChatGPT app, a search engine, and now it could be developing a browser. That’s not to mention the AI device that Sam Altman is working on with other top tech minds. It seems like OpenAI is targeting everything that makes Google…. well Google. It could be instrumental in the company’s eventual downfall. Only time will tell how this head-butt between Sundar Pichai and Sam Altman will end.
