William Racing released a statement saying that Franco Colapinto has been given a thorough follow-up evaluation and cleared to race Saturday evening in the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
“Franco’s health is our main priority, and we are relieved that he is well enough to race following such a significant incident,” the team statement read. “We thank the medical staff for prioritizing Franco’s health and wellbeing and for the excellent care he received.”
Colapinto was trying to make up time in the second zone after a slow start to his final lap in Q2 when he cut too close to the interior of the corner and hit the concrete wall. Colapinto was quick to signal that he was okay and exit the vehicle.
Colapinto’s crash was the 13th major repair that the Williams’ mechanics have had to tackle on a Grand Prix weekend. In the last round in Brazil, Both Colapinto and Albon sustained major crashes that led to complete rebuilds against a shortened time clock.
The Williams’ mechanics were able to repair Colapinto’s car. However, the team took the opportunity to set up changes during the repair; Colapinto will start from the pitlane instead of the 14th.
