LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – People who live and work along Fern Valley Road say it doesn’t surprise them that two pedestrians were hit and killed by cars in a span of three days.
“This is a very busy street and there’s lots of cars,” Cara Robinson, who has worked on Fern Valley Road for about three years, said. “People driving fast and, you know, not really paying attention all the time.”
Through its transportation safety initiative, Vision Zero Louisville, the city wants to reduce roadway deaths to zero by 2050. WAVE News asked Mayor Craig Greenberg’s office if there were plans to make adjustments along Fern Valley Road. A spokesperson said not right now.
The spokesperson did say Mayor Greenberg wants to see changes like the ones recently made on Bardstown Road in other places in Louisville. That project reduced the number of traffic lanes and expanded sidewalks.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) collaborates with the Metro in its safety initiative. In a statement to WAVE News, a spokesperson said, in part, KYTC will review crash reports to review contributing factors and determine whether infrastructure improvements may be warranted.
People like Robinson, though, have ideas in mind.
“Maybe stop lights or maybe even having a presence of the police or something patrolling the area would help to slow some people down,” she mentioned.
A stretch of Fern Valley Road is part of the Louisville Metro Police Department’s (LMPD) new Crime Reduction Plan. LMPD has said that could include more patrols in the area.
WAVE News reached out to LMPD to see if they hoped this could make roads safer for people who travel through here. We have not heard back.
