YouTube TV is reportedly offering a 6-month price lock to some users before the price hike. The streaming service is offering this deal to some subscribers. Instead of the new $82.99 monthly rate, these users can keep the current $72.99 rate for 6 more months.
YouTube TV offering a temporary price lock to some subscribers
According to multiple users on Reddit (via 9To5Google), YouTube TV subscribers who try to cancel their plans are seeing an option to lock in the current $72.99 rate for an additional 6 months. The price hike to $82.99 starts on January 13 2025 so this gives users more time before the hike.
The offer appears during the cancellation process. First, YouTube TV asks users if they’d rather pause their subscription instead of canceling. If they proceed to cancel, the platform sometimes offers the price lock as an option. Notably, this offer doesn’t seem to be available to all users as some have reported they couldn’t get it. This is likely a way to retain customers who are unhappy with the higher price. Many subscribers are taking advantage of the offer.
YouTube TV announces $10 price hike
Yesterday, YouTube TV announced a price hike, surprising many users. This comes after a previous mix-up where Verizon mistakenly said there would be a price increase and Google denied it. Now it’s official. Subscribers received emails confirming the new pricing.
Starting January 13, 2025, the YouTube TV base plan price will increase by $10 to $82.99 per month. In an email to subscribers, Google said the increase is due to “the rising cost of content and investments we make in the quality of our service”. YouTube TV has hiked its prices since its launch in 2017. Initially, it started at $34.99 per month, then added more channels and features and hiked the price. The last price hike was in April 2023 to $72.99.
Even though YouTube TV is getting more expensive many people will still keep it because they like the shows and sports it offers. They also likely enjoy how easy it is to use and the extra features like cloud storage to record shows. For many it’s worth the price even if it keeps going up. But with the new price hike, some people might start to think twice. The price will go up 13% which could make some people cancel. We’ll see if people will keep using YouTube TV or if they will look for cheaper options.
