Find X8 Pro or Galaxy S24 Ultra: Which Phone Is Better?

We had both the Oppo Find X8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra in for review, and both phones left quite the impression. When the S24 Ultra launched, it was positioned as possibly the best phone ever made, with standout features like Circle to Search and other AI-driven enhancements that set a new standard. Then the Oppo Find X8 Pro came around, and the competition got fiercer.

Oppo’s return to Western markets with the Find X8 Pro caught our attention in Pearl White and Space Black finishes, and even an iconic S Pen like the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s. But it’s not just the aesthetics we care about. Here are areas where the two phones share similarities and have differences.

Design

From Galaxy S24 Ultra review, there’s not much physical difference over what we’ve already seen before. It’s just like Samsung to shape the phone in a familiar body design with sharp edges, almost identical to the S23 Ultra. The rear panel, camera setup, and general proportions remain largely unchanged, so it’s hard to spot any significant differences at first glance.

But in Oppo’s world, there is little copy and paste. Looking at the previous and current models, you can tell that they’re not the same phones. Yes, both the Find X8 Pro and Find X7 Pro have centrally placed camera modules that are circular, but the Find X8 Pro has four lenses arranged symmetrically, while the Find X7 Ultra has three round lenses and one square-shaped sensor.

In comparison with the S24 Ultra, the Find X8 Pro has a more rounded design. The difference lies in the width and thickness, whereas the S24 Ultra is wider and thicker. The S24 Ultra is also heavier at 233g, yet both have the same height.

Oppo used the Gorilla Glass 7i for its phone’s front and back, with an aluminum frame. On the other hand, Samsung used the Gorilla Armor glass and a Grade 2 titanium frame. Gorilla Glass Armor is stronger, tougher, and, more importantly, made for high-end phones. Gorilla Glass 7i is intended for cheaper phones, with less protection offered. Still, it holds its own against scratches and minor drops.

The Find X8 Pro is available in Space Black, Pearl White, and Blue colors, with the Pearl White being the most attractive option of them all. Meanwhile, the S24 Ultra comes in seven titanium-themed colors, giving you more options.

Display

The display is where everything happens on a smartphone. It’s your interaction point with all the visuals, content, games, and apps we interact with. Both phones are unarguably top-tier, but the S24 Ultra is on the higher level. We’ll explain why.

The S24 Ultra’s display has a higher resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels, which is sharper than the X8 Pro’s 1264 x 2780 pixels. The results are clearer and more detailed. However, it has a lower peak brightness of 2600 nits, while the X8 Pro can reach an impressive 4500 nits.

The real comparison lies in the technology used because it cuts across multiple aspects of display performance, from color accuracy and brightness to battery efficiency and durability. For the S24 Ultra, Samsung went with a Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X glass, while Oppo’s X8 Pro also uses an LTPO AMOLED screen. From the names, it goes without saying which one is better. But I’ll say it anyway.

Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X is an advanced screen version with a more flexible and adaptive refresh rate. It can go as high as 120Hz and as low as 1Hz when not in use. 2X here refers to its ability to adjust between these refresh rates more effectively, which is a luxury Oppo’s phone doesn’t have.

Performance

At some point, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was the name on every manufacturer’s lips. With the new Snapdragon 8 Elite and the X8 Pro’s Mediatek Dimensity 9400 chipset, its popularity has been overshadowed.

The Dimensity 9400 has a core running at 3.63 GHz (Cortex-X925), faster than the S24 Ultra’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 core running at 3.39 GHz (Cortex-X4). It will load apps slightly faster because of that extra clock speed.

That said, the S24 Ultra still has a better mix of cores if multitasking is your priority. If you use heavy editing photos or perform resource-intensive tasks, the core setup running from 2.2 GHz to 3.1 GHz allows it to handle everything at once without overheating or draining the battery.

Memory & battery

The Find X8 Pro offers three storage options: 256GB with 12GB of RAM, 512GB with 12GB of RAM, and 1TB with 12GB of RAM. The S24 Ultra offers 256GB with 12GB of RAM, 512GB with 12GB of RAM, and 1TB with 16GB of RAM.

While both have the same storage options at 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB, the Find X8 Pro has 16GB RAM for all options, while the S24 Ultra only has 16GB of RAM for the 1TB version.

As for battery, the Find X8’s battery is a 5,910 mAh non-removable battery with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging speeds. Meanwhile, the S24 Ultra carries a 5,000mAh battery and supports 45W wired and 15W wireless charging. The Find X8’s battery practically dwarfs the S24 Ultra’s. That extra 910mAh means it can push longer durations of intense apps. You’re also looking at quicker charging around 30 minutes.

Cameras

The S24 Ultra has a 200MP wide main camera with two 50MP periscope telephoto lenses accompanying it: one with a 3x optical zoom and another with a 5x optical zoom that adjusts between both moderate and long ranges. In front, there is a 12MP ultrawide camera.

On the other hand, the Find X8 Pro has three 50MP wide cameras with lower resolution compared to the S24 Ultra’s 200MP camera. The front camera is also 12MP. In practical use, the S24’s higher resolution wide camera and additional zoom capabilities make it more suited for detailed and ranged shots. The ability to record in 8K is another advantage.

Software and features

The Oppo Find X8 Pro runs the latest software version at the time of this review, which is Android 15 with ColorOS 15 overlaid on it. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra runs Android 14 with One UI 6.1.1 out of the box, although the One UI 7 beta has begun rolling out.

The Dimensity 9400 chip on the Find X8 Pro brings advanced AI capabilities and complements ColorOS 15 effectively. MediaTek promises on-device processing to keep your data private, and the chip’s LoRA training with Agentic AI helps apps learn your preferences to make its assistance more fluid.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s One UI is the company’s custom Android user interface that integrates Samsung’s apps alongside Google’s native ones, providing additional features from Samsung Health and Samsung DeX to the Bixby voice assistant. In terms of software updates, the Find X8 Pro promises five major Android updates, while the S24 Ultra promises seven major updates.

The verdict

To cap it all, the Oppo Find X8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra have great displays, camera technologies, and long software support. But the Find X8 Pro holds its own with powerful performance, a unique design, and competitive pricing. Samsung’s established presence in the international market, particularly in Europe, North America, and other regions, already gives it an edge.

But over-familiarity can breed contempt. This is where Oppo has the chance to shine As the brand continues to expand in Western markets. If you want something that’s not an overpriced Galaxy for a change, it’s an excellent phone. The decision ultimately comes down to whether you’re seeking a proven flagship with more polish or an innovative alternative from Oppo.
