The Android industry has left behind the trend of curved displays for flagship phones. Samsung was one of the pioneers in this type of device with the launch of the aging Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy Note Edge. The latest generations of the company’s flagship mobile devices have opted for a flatter profile. However, it is possible that Samsung has not yet ruled out a future dominated by curved-display smartphones.
MSPoweruser spotted a patent filed by Samsung in June 2024 before the USPTO, although the entity just made it public this month. The patent shows a curved display smartphone with special mechanisms to enhance its durability and prevent leaks of sealing liquid during assembly.
Samsung’s patent shows a curved display smartphone with a reinforced structure
According to the document, the system incorporates two sealing layers and a separate section that is specifically designed to prevent spills from the sealing liquid. This section, called the “blocking part,” is part of the visible portion of the device’s design. It is attached directly to its frame through a series of special grooves. The blocking part results in fewer damaged screens during assembly due to liquid sealant spills and even more resistant devices. After all, this component serves as an “additional frame” to reinforce the main structure.
It is not known if the South Korean giant will ever use this technology in a commercial device. For now, there have been no leaks about smartphones with curved displays from the firm. The Galaxy S25 series will maintain a design similar to that of its predecessors. Interestingly, another Samsung patent discovered this year describes a curved-display smartphone without physical buttons. Both patents seem to be compatible with the development of future devices. That said, this is just speculation for now.
The pros and cons of curved screens
Curved screen technology in phones has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are mainly aesthetic, as the devices look more premium and “advanced.” Plus, they help hide the side bezels of the screen, giving the sensation that they do not exist.
However, curved screens also have disadvantages that affect functionality, which is why manufacturers have been leaving them aside. The curved section presents a different color tone than the rest of the panel under certain viewing angles. Curves also make it difficult to use styluses, which are a key accessory on modern Galaxy S Ultra phones. Likewise, curved screens are problematic when trying to apply third-party protectors. Lastly, they make your phone more prone to damage after a fall since they leave a section of the screen more exposed.
