The Something Phone: DOOGEE’s Transparent Ambitions

In this day and age of smartphones, it’s hard to stand out from the crowd. Smartphone hardware has gotten to the point where pretty much every flagship runs the same chipset. This is why companies are finding new and creative ways to differentiate themselves. This is what DOOGEE has done with its latest smartphone, the DOOGEE Blade GT.

Light Elf…what?

Perhaps the most unique (or maybe not) feature of the DOOGEE Blade GT are the lights on the back of the phone. The company is calling it the “Light Elf”. It’s unclear how the company arrived at that name or what it even means or could be about, but basically, it’s a little light show that takes place on the rear of the handset.

According to DOOGEE, the lights work with things like music. “When the music volume is low each loop strip is less bright and flashes slower. As the volume increases, the brightness of the corresponding loop strip increases and flashes [sic] faster, which can be briefly fully iluminated [sic] or intensely flashing when encountering special sound effects such as heavy bass, drum beats, etc.”

Putting aside the novelty of the Light Elf system, the DOOGEE Blade GT is a pretty decent budget handset. The phone uses the MediaTek Dimensity 7050 chipset and with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It sports a 6.72-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It also comes with a 48MP main camera and boasts some AI functionality. There is also a 5,500mAh battery. The handset will ship with Android 14 preinstalled and it is unclear when DOOGEE plans to update it to Android 15.

Something different

It’s not hard to draw comparisons between the DOOGEE Blade GT and the Nothing Phone. The flashing LED lights on the back are a dead giveaway. DOOGEE did try to make its phone a little different by making it more rugged. This makes it perfect for those of you with butter fingers.

The company claims that the handset has received IP68, IP69K, and MIL-STD810H certifications. This means that it is both dust and water-resistant, can withstand drops and shocks from certain heights, and can also hold up in extreme temperatures.

All in all, the DOOGEE Blade GT is not a bad phone. The price is also pretty affordable at $359, considering the specs and features you’ll be getting. It is available for purchase directly from the company’s website.
