This is probably our best look at the Switch 2 before its launch!

CES is happening right now, and we’re getting a sneak peek at some amazing and interesting tech. We’ve seen announcements from different companies from all over the globe. Nintendo wasn’t among the companies, but we managed to get some pretty significant news about its upcoming gaming console. Thanks to an accessory maker, we got a look at a Switch 2 dummy unit at CES.

News and rumors about the Switch 2 are flowing in as Nintendo prepares to make an official announcement. So far, it looks like the system won’t stray far from the design of the original Switch. We’ve gotten some leaks of how the console will look along with its Joy-Cons. While these look convincing, you’ll still want to take them with a grain of salt.

We saw a Switch 2 dummy unit at CES

While the aforementioned leaks should be taken cautiously, this next bit of news is pretty damning. Accessory maker Genki attended CES to show off some of its accessories for the upcoming console. We’re surprised that the company was allowed to show off accessories for the console when Nintendo itself hasn’t even lifted the veil on it.

In any case, Genki showed some of the add-ons for the Switch 2, and in the process, showed off a dummy unit. Accessory makers often need a 1:1 dummy unit of the device they’re making accessories for, for obvious reasons.

Looking at the unit, it looks like Nintendo didn’t rock the boat on the Switch’s design much. It has the same overall shape, which will make it recognizable. Be that as it may, it looks like the Switch 2 will be notably larger than the original. In the video, we see the Switch 2 dummy unit being compared to the original. We see that the system itself is bigger and that the screen is noticeably bigger as well. We can’t tell the bezel size of the screen on the dummy unit, unfortunately.

Differences

One thing to note about the Joy-Con itself is that it looks like there’s an extra trigger button right next to the LZ/ZR buttons. However, that’s not the case. Nintendo seems to have enlarged the button that will let you detach the Joy-Con from the system. Also, rather than pulling upward on the Joy-Con to take it off, you’ll simply pull it outward. Another notable change is the fact that the L and R buttons are a little larger, running down the side of the Joy-Con just a bit more compared to the original Switch’s Joy-Cons.

One more thing to note is that there’s an additional button on the right Joy-Con. It sits just below the joystick. Right now, we don’t know what that button will do.

Otherwise, the button configuration looks to be the same with separate buttons for the D-pad, the “+” and “-” buttons, and the screenshot button. According to the video, it looks like the Switch 2 will have two USB-C ports, one at the top and the other at the bottom. We’d be excited to see what that’s all about.

Get a Switch 2 early?

This is something that you’ll want to take with a grain of salt. According to the report, the accessory maker hinted that you can buy a Switch 2 early on the black market. That’s shady, of course, and there’s no way to confirm it without potentially angering Nintendo (a fate worse than death). Whether it’s true or not, you’d want to steer clear of any sort of business like that. If the reports are true, then we’ll see the Switch 2 hit the market in March this year. Either then or in April. That’s when Genki will launch its devices, and it mentioned that the Switch 2 will launch in April. We’ll just need to wait and see.
