LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Combining fun and education isn’t always easy, but one annual event in Lincoln gives kids a mix of both, inspiring them to use their own ideas to cross the finish line, brick by brick.
The Museum of American Speed has no shortage of real cars on display, but the main attraction on Saturday was the one made out of Legos.
The Lego Pit Stop is an annual event put on by the museum for the last decade that fills up quickly year after year.
“It’s such a wonderful event,” said Kevin Sander, Museum of American Speed. “Families really enjoy it, and it gets filled up weeks in advance.”
Combining creativity with competition, each participating kid is given a Lego model car upon entry, which they can then modify and test before putting it to the ultimate test.
“We encourage the kids to think about what they’re doing when they build their model car,” Sander said. “To think about the science behind it. And we also offer a lesson during the event that teaches them the basic about velocity, friction and weight for them to use on their car, and then hopefully take home with them.”
Racing their custom rides in a double-elimination bracket for the trophy.
“It’s a competitive event, but it’s so much fun too and we’re just so happy to have it here,” Sanders said.
This was the first of two Lego Pit Stop days, with the second being Jan. 25, though that date is sold out as well.
In total around 80 kids signed up across both events, and the museum said they are always impressed with the ideas kids bring with them each year.
“They’ll do everything from swapping out the tires, adding a little weight here and there, and just putting a cool design on the front,” Sander said. “It can really educate kids about STEM learning, and hopefully they become the future engineers and architects.”
