Join us as we take a closer look at how the Springfield Rail Improvements Project, new transportation HUB and Third Street Greenway projects are positioning Illinois’ capital city for an exciting and innovative future. Speakers will include the city of Springfield’s chief city engineer, the Sangamon County administrator, and project managers from Hanson Professional Services.
Nathan Bottom, P.E., has held various engineering positions with the city of Springfield over the last 20 years, including subdivision engineer, development engineer, construction engineer, Office of Public Works director and, most recently, chief city engineer.
In his current role, Nathan is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing Springfield’s capital improvement projects and the city’s infrastructure-related grants; leading strategic planning efforts, development review and design-related tasks; directing public works grant administration and reporting; compiling the annual Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards for the Office of Budget and Management; and submitting the Consolidated Year-End Financial Report for public works-related projects. Throughout his career with the city, Nate has been instrumental in overseeing critical projects that improve transportation, utilities and public spaces.
Nathan earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Brian McFadden has more than 30 years of experience in public policy and public administration at the city, county and state levels. Currently, Brian is the Sangamon County administrator, a position he has held since 2009. The county administrator is the chief appointed official for county government and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of county government. Prior to the county, Brian served as the chief of staff for the Illinois State Senate Republicans and as the chief of staff for Springfield Mayor Karen Hasara.
Brian serves on the Springfield Area Transportation Study Board, the Springfield Economic and Community Development Commission, and the Springfield-Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission. An inductee of the University of Illinois Springfield’s Legislative Intern Hall of Fame, he is a dedicated public servant and a respected figure in Springfield and Sangamon County.
Brian is a Springfield native who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in communications from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
Dennis Wilkinson, P.E., S.E., is the project manager for the Springfield-Sangamon County Transportation Center project. He joined Hanson Professional Services Inc. in 2001 and serves as a vice president and the firm’s geostructural practice lead. His experience includes program development, design and construction document preparation for building projects and historical renovation projects.
Known for his innovative approach and dedication to quality and sustainability, Dennis has been a key contributor to a wide variety of complex infrastructure projects. He is a licensed professional and structural engineer and holds a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Michael Mendenhall, P.E., S.E., is a senior structural engineer at Hanson Professional Services Inc., joining the firm in 2002. He specializes in engineering, planning, and design, and his experience includes numerous bridges, structures, and retaining walls across the U.S. Michael is the project manager for the $544 million Springfield Rail Improvements Project.
His strong background in project management and technical design has allowed Michael to play a pivotal role in advancing a diverse array of infrastructure and development projects. His client focus and commitment to excellence exemplify Hanson’s dedication to creating sustainable and efficient solutions for communities nationwide.
Michael received an associate’s degree in engineering science from Lincoln Land Community College and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
