Crazy Thin: Here Are Official Images of Potential OnePlus Open 2

At the time I bought my current device, there were four major reasons why I didn’t opt for a foldable instead. The most obvious is the price, which is far from changing. Another was the scratch-prone inner screen—that’s been improving slowly. Third was that they weren’t true flagships, but many of them are now.

The final reason was that foldables, when folded, were just too bulky for my taste. But, you almost certainly know that story has changed a lot in recent years. The Oppo Find N5 (which the OnePlus Open 2 will likely be based on) is the next major foldable to expect, and worries about thickness will forever be a thing of the past after it.

Oppo’s Upcoming Foldable Will Be the Thinnest in the World

The thinness of a phone hasn’t meant much in a while, especially considering the average smartphone dances around the 8 mm mark, which is comfortable enough to hold. There is one exception to that though, and that’s foldable phones. You basically have two phones in one, so it is important that they’re thin enough not to end up as absolute bricks. The good thing is that more recent entries have really improved in that aspect.

Well, things are going to get even better—to a point where they physically won’t be able to get any better. The Oppo Find N5 has already been teased to be the thinnest foldable in the world, but now, we’re getting our first real glimpse at exactly how thin that will be, with a comparison to an iPhone 16 Pro Max. These images are official, as they were shared by an Oppo employee on Weibo.

The Oppo Find N5 looks to be about half the thickness of the iPhone when unfolded. It’s the thickness of two coins stacked on top of each other. That’s very thin and suggests a thickness under 4 mm when unfolded. We’ve only seen that before with the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate. It’s so thin that the USB-C port doesn’t have much room left to breathe. We’re reaching the limit, it seems.

This Could Mean Good Things for the OnePlus Open 2

Oppo and OnePlus are both owned by the same parent company. This explains why you might have noticed that some OnePlus devices closely resemble models released by Oppo prior. The most notable example of that is the Oppo Find N3 essentially being identical to the OnePlus Open. That will likely still be the case with the Oppo Find N5 and the OnePlus Open 2.

If you’re following along, you should be able to tell why that’s so exciting. It’s because it means that the OnePlus Open 2 could also inherit the ridiculously thin build that we’re talking about now, and that could instantly make it a standout foldable in global markets.

The phone is expected to come with a Snapdragon 8 Elite, which should mean no issues with performance. The Oppo is expected to launch next month, so we should know a lot more by then.
