Samsung Galaxy Ring Review – jim o brien

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is the latest innovation from the company and something most of us are not familiar with when it comes to rings so to speak there is only a handful of them out there and perhap with Samsung after launching one others now may follow suit.

I am a watch guy but not so much a Ring guy you could say and many asked me what is the point of this in the first place which I get and when I told people the price they just laughed and said hey Jim your smart watches pretty much do the same thing which again is a fair comment.

The ring itself looks cool but looks plastic with lights on it like you see on the back of your smartwatch however it is on the thicker side and when taken off at night as I do not wear a ring or watch to bed religiously and kind of defeats some of the purpose for me getting sleep activity and you can still feel it on your finger hours after removing it which was annoying for me, I also have to mention there is a notch on the ring which tells you the right side up so to speak but continuously had to adjust it.

The case it comes in is cool though which also acts as the charger for it, the battery life is good and overall should you require to keep the case with you on travels and so on it is small like an earbuds case and can easily fit in your pocket or bag.

If you are not a Samsung device user you are missing out on features this is nothing new these days with products being tied to an ecosystem which I get but for other users who do not like being tied in your are at a loss here particularly iPhone users who are ruled out altogether I used my Google Pixel 9 Pro for testing.

The ring is great for getting stats daily and at night when I do not wear a ring and will offer suggestions and you can fill in some items yourself which for me always has been annoying like your water intake for example after a week or two you have a good idea of what is actually going on and can see if there is any growing concerns you might need to get checked out.

What does it actually offer you though?

Pretty much what your smartwatch does and it has an AI powered health tracking  it has auto detection for those who are into running or walking which is mostly my thing and some cycling. Again though it is limited device depending you can download an extra app though you will need to download the Galaxy wearable app and Samsung health app to get the most out of it.

You can monitor you heart rate blood oxygen levels Sp02 levels sleep and skin patterns and so on and whilst mostly accurate at times it was off compared to my Pixel watch 3 and watch ultra 2. You can also find your ring if lost which is handy via blinking lights.

This for me a a niche product for now and perhaps if the device was unlocked to more devices and outside the Samsung Eco System would serve them more and get more users on board who want less screens to look at which is another intended feature of this which is a good thing by the way as we are all to much stuck with heads in screens today be it a watch or phone.

Galaxy Ring App

Overall it is a good start to some extent but shooting themselves in the foot in another with the other competitors out there some time now but I get their point keeping it all in on ecosystem like their earbuds for example but this will probably change over time not just with Samsung but with others keeping them tied down.
