Gemini Live now shows simplified phone call-style notifications

Since last year, Google has been working to simplify how a user interacts with the Gemini Live assistant as it runs in the background on their device. The search engine giant has now quietly started rolling out a new update to the Google app for Android devices that brings phone call-style notifications for the Gemini Live assistant. The company has reportedly been working on this functionality since November last year.

Google has simplified how you interact with Gemini Live

The new update for the Gemini Live assistant has replaced the old UI with new phone call-style notifications. Earlier, if Gemini Live was running in the background, you’d see its sparkling icon in the status bar. By checking the notification area, you could see a notification that showed that the AI was listening, apart from an option to “End Live mode.”

However, now Google has reportedly simplified how you interact with the Gemini Live artificial intelligence assistant. After the new update, Live with Gemini utilizes Android’s phone call-style notifications. Now, you will see the Gemini Live icon with a huge red button for “Hang Up” and “Hold”. The former allows you to hang up on Gemini, while the latter lets you pause or continue the conversation. Furthermore, a call chip replaces the Gemini logo in the status bar, displaying a live count.

The new update is starting to land on some phones

According to 9to5Google, the new update for Gemini Live with the new user interface is starting to land on some devices. The source found it on the Pixel 9 Pro running the Google app beta version 16.4. It appears to be a gradual rollout, as the publication didn’t find it on any other devices.

Google could start rolling out the new update to all users in the coming weeks. The company could be testing it first on a small group of users.
