PUBG is being turned into a tactical top-down shooter

PUBG is well-known in the game industry as one of the defining battle royale shooters on the market, but soon PUBG will be going in a slightly different direction, as Krafton and PUBG Studios have just announced a top-down tactical shooter game for the franchise. Officially called PUBG: Blindspot, Krafton, and PUBG Studios don’t have a planned release date for the game just yet. It’s also not mentioned if the game will be available on Android or if it’s a PC-only title. Given that mobile wasn’t mentioned at all though, it’s likely this is PC-only for now.

It also won’t be long before you can try the game in a limited capacity. PUBG: Blindspot will be getting a playable demo that Steam users can test starting on February 20 at 8PM Pacific. This launch coincides with Steam Next Fest, which is due to begin on February 24 at 10AM Pacific and go until March 3 at 10AM Pacific. Krafton doesn’t mention an end date for the demo, but it’s likely the demo will disappear once Steam Next Fest is over. So that will give players a little over a week to check it out.

PUBG: Blindspot is a 5v5 top-down tactical shooter

What is perhaps the most interesting detail of this game is not that it’s a top-down tactical shooter, but that it’s a 5v5 top-down tactical shooter. Upon reading about this game my initial thought was that this was a single-player tactical shooter game. Maybe because that’s what I’m familiar with when it comes to top-down shooters. Single-player experiences. That isn’t what this game is at all, however.

It’s obviously much smaller in scale than the PUBG players are familiar with. It won’t be a battle royale on a sprawling map where you compete to be the last player standing. Instead, it’s a multiplayer PvP game where you’re competing against another team, but in significantly smaller spaces. There’s one team of defenders and one team of attackers. And not too dissimilar to Rainbow Six: Siege, your goal as attackers will be to breach whatever compound the map is on and complete an objective, while the defenders try to ward you off.

There are several points of entry to make things more strategic. So you can plan out routes and try to flank the enemy. You can also breach walls and there are what appear to be more than a few types of gadgets players can use.

There are multiple modes of play

While we expect there will be more content in the full game, the demo has a handful of things for players to test. There are two modes of play in the demo including Team Deathmatch and Demolition missions. Furthermore, there will be three Team Deathmatch maps and four Demolition mission maps. Additionally, there will be ten different characters to try.

Each character has their own unique special weapons and tools as well. This should give matches some variety and make things more exciting. If you’re interested in this game, you can check it out in a couple of weeks. You can also check out the trailer below. Additionally, you can add the game to your Steam Wishlist.
