If you’ve been an Android lover long enough, it’s hard to imagine that you’ve never heard of Google I/O before. The search-giant-turned-tech-giant has been holding the event yearly for quite some time now. To be fair, it’s not the most consumer-facing event, as it primarily focuses on updates to the software in a way that’ll entice developers the most.
2025’s edition of Google I/O has a date, and that’s May 20th and May 21st, which is just under 100 days away. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming event, as well as what we might expect to see when it comes around.
Google I/O 2025 Is Holding on May 20th and 21st in California
It’s time to save the date. Google I/O 2025 is on its way, and Google is giving plenty of notice ahead of it. The event will take place on May 20th and May 21st in Google’s home of Mountain View, California, which is its usual home. You’ll be able to catch the event on a live stream (or you might be lucky enough to catch it in person) at 10 AM PT, which is 5 PM UTC.
You can register for Google I/O 2025 here. This will sign you up for announcements, keynote information, and so much more, to keep you on track and fully updated ahead of the conference and during it.
Expect a Lot of Software Announcements, Especially AI
Google I/O is a developer conference, which is why, as a regular consumer, there might be very little that actually interests you. However, if you’re a fan of the more technical aspects of Android and Google or you’re a developer, then you’re definitely going to have a lot to drool over at the event.
Quite naturally, we can expect to hear tons about Google’s AI models: Gemini, Imagen, Project Astra, Gemma, and others. Again, the aspects being touched on at the event will likely be a lot more technical and developer-focused.
Android XR will almost certainly have demos and keynotes of its own. Android 16 is also expected to launch in the first half of this year, which could either mean that Google could surprise us and make the OS official at I/O or give us a sneak peek into it ahead of its probable launch about a month later.
Which Hardware Can We Expect to See?
The most consumer-focused thing that Google does at Google I/O is reveal new products. Besides the Pixel 8a, Google sort of made it a tradition to release its new “a”-series devices at its Google I/O event. However, that didn’t happen last year and it is very unlikely to happen this year—especially since the Pixel 9a is expected to launch next month.
However, Google has said that new products will make an appearance at the event. This could be the company teasing the Pixel 10 series, showing off a new entry to the Pixel Buds family, or just more general hardware like Nest products for your smart home.
