Apple has officially launched the iPhone 16E, a refreshed version of the iPhone SE (2022), marking a significant step in its localization strategy. From day one, the device is being assembled in India to cater to both domestic consumers and international exports. With this move, Apple has now achieved localized production for its entire iPhone 16 series.

Key Features and Specifications
The iPhone 16E is powered by Apple’s A18 chip, the same processor used in the standard iPhone 16 models. This enables AI-driven functionalities while improving battery efficiency with Apple’s in-house 5G modem. The device will be available in two colors—black and white—and three storage options: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. Pricing starts at ₹59,900, and sales begin on February 28 via Apple stores, e-commerce platforms, and authorized retail partners.
Competitive Landscape and Pricing Strategy
Analysts believe pricing will be a decisive factor in India, as the iPhone 16E competes with older models, such as the iPhone 15, which offers better camera capabilities at a similar price point. With bank and card offers, the net price of the iPhone 16E could settle around ₹55,000, but experts suggest that keeping it below ₹50,000 would have been more attractive for budget-conscious Indian consumers.
While the price difference between the iPhone 16E and the base iPhone 16 makes sense in postpaid operator-controlled markets, open markets have more pricing variables. Discounts from channel partners could reduce the gap between the two models, influencing buyer decisions. Since a majority of premium segment buyers in India purchase phones on EMI, the monthly price difference between the iPhone 16E and iPhone 16 may be minimal.
Apple’s Market Growth in India
Apple recently entered the top five smartphone brands in India for the first time, and its local manufacturing push is expected to strengthen its market position. Research firms predict that the iPhone 16E will accelerate upgrades from older Apple models, expanding Apple’s reach in emerging markets like Southeast Asia and Latin America.
By offering a competitively priced iPhone with advanced AI capabilities, Apple aims to attract new users who previously bought second-hand iPhones or were hesitant due to high pricing. Market analysts estimate that the iPhone 16E could contribute to a 1% increase in global iPhone shipments.
