E-commerce giant Amazon has just announced that it is shutting down its app store for Android devices later this year. Amazon has sent a notice to developers that they will not be able to submit their new applications to the store. The company originally launched the Amazon Appstore back in March 2011 in nearly 200 countries. Amazon launched it as an alternative to Google’s Play Store for Android devices. It’s worth mentioning that Amazon last year announced it would discontinue support for its app store on Windows devices.
Starting August 2025, Amazon is shutting down its app store for Android
In a notice to developers, Amazon said “Starting August 20, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device.” On the same date, The company will also discontinue the Amazon Coins program, which people could use to purchase games and apps on the app store. It also mentioned that it will refund any coins that users hold as of August 20 this year.
Starting today, Amazon’s consumers in Japan will no longer be able to make in-app purchases (IAPs) on the Amazon Appstore. However, IAPs will continue to be available in other markets until August 20, 2025. Also, the developers can submit updates to their existing live applications on the Amazon Appstore until the service ends on August 20, 2025.
Furthermore, Amazon added that the app store will still be functional on its own devices, including the Fire TV and Fire Tablet, as per Techcrunch.
Amazon will also discontinue support for its app store on Windows from March
As mentioned above, Amazon’s Appstore for Windows devices that lets you install Android apps will also shut down from March 5, 2025. Amazon started offering its Appstore on Windows 11 in June 2021. In March last year, Amazon announced that Windows would remove Android apps within a year. Unfortunately, Amazon hasn’t yet clarified why it is ending support for its Appstore for Windows and Android devices.
