According to a report from Bloomberg, YouTube is about to release a cheaper “Premium Lite” subscription for the streaming service.
The new tier will be aimed at users who are primarily interested in content other than music videos. So, that could include vlogs, video essays, exercise videos, tutorials, game playthroughs, podcasts and more.
While no price has been revealed, YouTube previously conducted a limited test of a Premium Lite subscription in some countries between 2021 and 2023. The Verge writes that a user in Australia claimed that the plan still contained some ads and cost 8.99 AUD, half the price of a regular Premium membership.
The Premium Lite plan is said to be initially available in the US, Australia, Germany and Thailand, with no word about a UK launch just yet.
If the Lite membership follows the same pricing pattern as Australia (half the price of the standard option) then it could cost around $7 per month in the US, and roughly £6.50 per month in the UK.
