Just yesterday, Apple introduced the new 2025 iPad Air model with a handful of upgrades, including an Apple M3 chip. Today, Apple has unveiled the 2025 Mac Studio as the “most powerful Mac ever made”. The brand’s new Mac Studio comes in two variants – one with the M4 Max chip and the other one with the new M3 Ultra processor. Apple has introduced the new Mac Studio models more than 1.5 years after the launch of the previous generation.
2025’s Mac Studio with the M4 Max chip is “up to 3.5x faster” than the M1 Max model
Apple claims that the 2025 Mac Studio model with the M4 Max chip is capable of delivering more than 3.5x faster performance than the M1 Max variant. The desktop computing machine has a 14- to 16-core CPU and a 32- to 40-core GPU. Similar to the M4 Max chip-powered MacBook Pro, this version of the Mac Studio starts with 36GB of RAM, which is up from 32GB in the M2 model.
Notably, you can configure it with up to 128GB of RAM, a bump from the 96GB RAM ceiling of the M2 Max Studio. Similar to its predecessor, the new Mac Studio offers 512GB of SSD storage to start with but can go as high as 8TB.
The new Mac Studio with M3 Ultra chip has 96GB of RAM to start
As for the Mac Studio’s M3 Ultra chip variant, it flaunts up to 32 cores, 24 of which are performance cores. It is “50 percent more than any earlier Ultra chip”. Its GPU has a base 60-core configuration that maxes out at 80 cores. Apple says this Mac Studio variant has a 32-core Neural Engine for machine learning and AI apps. The company claims that the new machines are capable of running large language models (LLMs) with over 600 billion parameters entirely in memory, the most ever in a personal computer.
Apple’s M3 Ultra variant of the Mac Studio provides the base model with 96GB of RAM, which users can upgrade to 512GB in the top-tier edition. Also, you can bump the base 1TB of SSD storage to as high as 16TB. Notably, the GPUs of the new Mac Studios feature dynamic caching, which stores frequently used data in the cache to drop latency.
The exterior of the new Mac Studios is largely the same as their predecessors, including the square-ish silver box design. They have two USB-C ports and an SD card reader on the front. There are four more USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, and an Ethernet port at the rear. Only the four USB-C ports of the M4 Max model are Thunderbolt 5 ports. To get it on all six USB-C ports, you’ll need to go for the M3 Ultra Mac Studio variant.
As far as the pricing is concerned, the new Mac Studio with M4 Max chip starts at $1,999, while the M3 Ultra will be available from $3,999. Both new models are available to pre-order and will start shipping in major markets like the US on March 12th.
