“Moving Swiftly to 2050″: A look into the future of transportation in the Grand Valley – KJCT

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – A local organization looked 25 years into the future and crafted a plan.

The Regional Transportation Planning Office Staff held an open house event to talk about the future of the community on Thursday. The event looked at the 2050 Regional Transportation Plan.

The main goals of the 2050 GVRTP are:

  • Safety: Improve safety for all users of the region’s transportation system.
  • Efficiency: Enhance system performance for all modes.
  • Health and Environment: Incorporate health and environmental considerations into transportation planning and decisions.
  • Economy and Fiscal Responsibility: Invest in transportation systems that support the economic health of the region.
  • Equity: Advance equity through transportation planning and improvements.

“I would say generally people are pretty happy with our roadway network,” Dana Brosig, Director of Regional Transportation Planning Office, said.

The regional transportation plan gets updated every five years. Officials said they have worked with staff, stakeholders and the public to update the 2045 Regional Transportaion Plan so they can “move swiftly” to 2050 for the residents and visitors of Mesa County.

Officials say looking ahead is important because the decisions made now will impact the future.

“Having that long range planning gives you that ability to think more in terms of ‘what are our values, what is the vision for the future’,” Andrew Gingerich, Transit Planner, said. “And there’s obviously a lot of uncertainty 25 years from. So, we are kind of are looking at the path that we’re on and if we keep going down the path that we’re on. But it does give us a chance to talk more broadly about our transportation future as a community.”

The plan will be taken to the Grand Valley Regional Transportation Committee in April for adoption. Community members are invited to share any comments or give feedback by April 4th.
