For the most part, the hardware Apple included in the iPhone 16e isn’t new or surprising. However, one particular component has gotten us quite excited, and that is the inclusion of the Apple C1 modem. This is the first custom modem from Apple. Now according to the latest rumors, Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro models could end up using the C2.
C2 coming to iPhone 18 Pro
Based on a research note with investment firm GF Securities today, analyst Jeff Pu claims that Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro models, which are due in 2026, will feature the use of the C2 modems. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard these rumors. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously made similar claims.
Unfortunately, we don’t know much about the C2 modem. The C1 is a 5G-capable modem that supports sub-6GHz. Apple is working on an updated model that comes with mmWave support. It’s probably a safe assumption that the C2 will support both sub-6GHz and mmWave. It will most likely be more power-efficient compared to its predecessor.
Apple is relying on Qualcomm for its smartphone modems at the moment. This deal will run until 2027. This means that for now, Apple will use a mix of Qualcomm’s modems and its own modems, like we’ve seen in the iPhone 16e. Apple is also rumored to use the C1 in the iPhone 17 Air, while the rest of the lineup will continue using Qualcomm’s components.
Apple’s acquisition bears fruit
It has taken Apple a while to develop its own modems. The company bought Intel’s smartphone modem business many years ago, but it took Apple a little long than expected to start churning out its own modems. However, it is possible that the lawsuit between Apple and Qualcomm, which included a six-year licensing agreement, could have delayed the Cupertino company’s plans.
The jury is still out on whether the C1 modem is as capable as Qualcomm’s modems. However, from Apple’s point of view, reducing its overall reliance on third-party companies is a good thing.
