Summary
- Severance is a must-watch show on Apple TV+
- Sci-fi fans will enjoy Silo and Foundation
- Apple TV+ shows like Ted Lasso keep viewers loyal
Severance has grabbed audiences throughout its first two seasons. It is arguably the buzziest show currently on television. With the Season 2 finale out now, and rumors that we won’t have to wait long for the third season, fans’ hype for the show has never been higher.
The show, led masterfully by Adam Scott and a superb cast that includes Britt Lower, John Turturro, Zach Cherry, Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken, Tramell Tillman, and others, is unlike almost anything on TV currently. The Apple TV+ show has been lauded for its unique concept, storylines, mysterious storytelling, and excellent direction. It’s no wonder the series helped drive an estimated 2 million new people to subscribe to Apple TV+ last month,
However, now that the series has concluded its sophomore season, should you send your Apple TV+ subscription down to the testing floor while waiting for season 3? Here’s what I think:

Apple TV+
Apple TV+ is a global streaming service which offers on-demand access to a growing list of exclusive content, including Severance, Ted Lasso, Slow Horses, and much more.
Apple TV+ is a great streamer for sci-fi fans
If this is your thing, you should keep it

Severance is absolutely a sci-fi show as, to quote Mark S., “the work is mysterious and important.” Almost nobody in the show actually knows the full extent of what is going on, making it a thriller and mystery at the same time. But Severance isn’t the only good sci-fi show on Apple TV+.
Silo, another futuristic TV series takes place in a giant, underground silo because the world has become too uninhabitable on the surface. It is based on a trilogy of sci-fi novels, and follows a population that is living under strict regulations that they believe are meant to protect them. It has a great cast featuring Rebecca Ferguson, Common, Rashida Jones, Tim Robbins, David Oyelowo, and more. Foundation is another must-see for sci-fi fans, with its far-off look at life on different planets under a galactic empire. Other shows like Dark Matter, Invasion, For All Mankind, See, and more prove that Apple TV+ is a great place for sci-fi TV fans.

Unfortunately, Apple TV+’s original movies are lacking
It has produced some real duds
Apple
Apple TV+ has tried to showcase big-name stars rather than focus on actually good movies in its movie library. While it did become the first streaming service to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards for Coda, it has produced its fair share of ho-hum films. It had a multi-picture deal with Tom Hanks and produced films like Finch and Greyhound, which are fine, but nothing people remember that well. Its most recent output, The Gorge, features Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy as snipers guarding a giant gorge and battling monsters. It has a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is fine, but nothing spectacular.
It seems to use a formula of two big stars (for the most part) to get people to watch movies. Fly Me to the Moon with Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, Wolfs with Brad Pitt and George Clooney, Ghosted with Chris Evans and Ana de Armas, The Instigators with Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, Spirited with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds and more have all come out in the past few years. None of those have gone on to really move the needle for the streamer. In fact, Ghosted was downright terrible, in my opinion.

How to get Apple TV+ for cheap or free
You’ll probably have to pay eventually, but you can put that off for a long time.
If Apple TV+ continues to produce shows that are hits with fans, and then staggers the premieres of the shows’ next seasons, they can keep fans locked into their subscriptions for a while.
There are other TV shows that make this streamer worth it
All kinds of genres and some big hits

Apple TV+ has had huge success at the Emmy Awards and Golden Globes with shows like Ted Lasso and Slow Horses. These shows are completely different but widely lauded by fans and critics, thanks in large part to the stellar casts and writing. Speaking from a personal standpoint, I previously used to cancel my Apple TV+ subscription in between seasons of Ted Lasso and renewed when a new season premiered. The show not only hits my love of sports but also is warm, charming, and really funny. Slow Horses is a can’t-miss thriller led by Gary Oldman and a crew of MI5 agents working through incredible spy cases.
Both of these shows are huge hits for Apple TV+, as are Shrinking, The Morning Show, Bad Sisters, to name a few. New shows like Prime Suspect, Dope Thief and The Studio are showing what the future of Apple TV+ can be. If Apple TV+ continues to produce shows that are hits with fans, and then staggers the premieres of the shows’ next seasons, they can keep fans locked into their subscriptions for a while.

Apple TV+ wanted to get into the sports broadcasting scene and has moved forward with Major League Soccer. Besides ESPN, there wasn’t a real showcase platform to watch a bulk of MLS games throughout the season prior to this collaboration. If you like a wide range of MLS teams, you’re probably happy with this addition to Apple TV+, though it is important to note that not every game is available on the streamer as users need to purchase the MLS League Pass add-on to gain access to every game.
The situation is similar for Apple TV+’s Friday Night Baseball package, which highlights one Major League Baseball game every Friday. More often than not, if your team is playing on Apple TV+ that Friday, it’s an annoyance to remember because you are normally watching the other five to six games a week on another platform or channel.

Sorry Apple TV+, I’m canceling my subscription for now
Apple TV+ is not worth it
My suggestion for anyone considering whether to keep Apple TV or not is to weigh how much you actually watch it. It can be a useful streamer if you like some of the exclusive shows on the platform. But once you catch up with the newest seasons of whatever titles catch your fancy, the streamer doesn’t have enough content to keep viewers sticking around.
If Apple TV+ can land some more hits and perhaps work on their scheduling as well as add content to their library, it could help keep audiences longer. But I will likely be canceling my subscription now that Severance is over. I can always catch up on any new shows or movies I miss when season 3 drops.
