Apple Martin Reveals What She's Majoring in at College — and It's Not Theater – People.com

Apple Martin may have two parents in the entertainment industry, but she’s not sure if she wants to follow in their footsteps yet.

The 20-year-old daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin spoke with Interview Magazine for her magazine debut and was asked by the outlet if she’s majoring in drama while at Vanderbilt University. “No,” she replied, laughing.

“I’m a law, history and society major, but I wish I would’ve taken — maybe I’ll take a theater course before I leave,” Martin continued. “It’s a fun balance between my very different extracurriculars and my major.”

Although she’s not technically majoring in theater, Martin is participating in a show this semester with an extracurricular group and, at the time of the interview, was getting her cast’s costumes together.

“It’s really busy because after spring break I have tech week and I have to get everyone’s costumes ready for the show,” she said.

“I’m in the lovely Vanderbilt Original Cast, the esteemed cabaret theater group. This semester’s show is a musical parody of Love Island called Love on an Island. It’s so fun. The songs are phenomenal,” added Martin.

As she’s balancing both her love for history and passion for drama outside of the classroom, Martin noted that she’s not sure what she wants to do with her life.

“I would love to do theater because I adore it so much,” Martin said. “I’ve obviously never done film before, but I’ve been trying to get involved in student films. I was born a theater kid.”

“I have a very low voice so whenever we’re doing harmonies, it’ll be like, ‘Alright, it’s the boys and Apple,'” she continued, laughing. “I’m singing my absolute favorite song this semester, which I’m so excited about. I’m definitely not the best in the org, but I love it.”

As for what kind of law she’s into, Martin said she takes inspiration from Hollywood.

“So the reason why I was originally like, ‘Maybe I’ll be a lawyer,’ was because I loved acting, but I was insecure and nervous, so I was like, ‘Oh my God, if I’m a lawyer, I can perform on the stage in a trial setting,’ ” she shared.

“It’s insane that I thought that. Also I cannot lie, I was like, ‘I’ll just be Elle Woods,’ ” Martin joked. “It’s a lot harder than it looks. I don’t know how she managed to go to law school every day as fabulous as she did. But I love history. I love true crime. I love investigating.”

“I also think it’s fun to look at the history of law and see how you can implement it in a modern context. If I were to be a lawyer, I would just want to help people. That’s probably the biggest thing.”
