A US judge has set a date for Google’s second remedies case, this one is in relation to Google’s ad tech case, as Google was defeated in court by the DOJ on that front too. As a reminder, Google’s remedies case for its search dominance is currently ongoing.
Google’s ad tech case gets May court date, second remedies case is about to begin
In any case, the date for this remedies case is May 2, a US judge has announced. It was ruled that Google illegally dominates two markets for online advertising technology, and this is the aftermath.
Judge Leonie Brinkema, in Alexandria, Virginia federal court, said that the hearing aims to get an early and broad sense of the potential remedies before focusing on specific measures Google will need to take.
As a reminder, on April 17, Google was found liable for “willfully acquiring and maintaining monopoly power”in markets for publisher ad servers and the market fro ad exchanges that is placed between buyers and sellers.
The company is already in the middle of its search dominance remedies trial
It remains to be seen how will Google make things right, but selling off parts of its business is an option. As a reminder, Google could also be forced to sell Chrome as part of its search dominance case.
All in all, Google has its hands full. One remedies case is underway, while the other will kick off in only a couple of days. The company will likely be forced to make major changes moving forward.
Google did announce that it will appeal both rulings moving forward. The company did not offer to sell Chrome either. In fact, Google said that Chrome needs Google in order to function properly. DOJ’s expert disagrees with that, as the two sides are going back and forth in court. Meanwhile, quite a few parties are interested in getting Chrome, including OpenAI and Yahoo, amongst others.
