Summary
- An unconfirmed source says Amazon will display the cost of tariffs.
- Amazon has refuted this claim, suggesting it may not be implemented.
- White House condemns the potential action as a political move even though it hasn’t been confirmed.
It’s no secret that President Trump’s
tariffs
are going to make the price of
basically everything
significantly higher. However, if you were wondering exactly how much a new
laptop
, game controller, or iPhone case was going to cost due to these tariffs, a new report suggested that Amazon recently cooked up a plan to tell you. However, this rumored new development is already under fire from the government as being “a hostile and political act” even though the feature has yet to debut, and now we know it may actually not have ever even existed.

Rumors about this new price display began circulating when an unconfirmed report was published Tuesday by Punchbowl News that said that Amazon didn’t want to “shoulder the blame” for increased costs on the website due to changes in tariff policy. The report says that an anonymous source indicated that the website would soon show surcharges and fees related to tariffs right next to the product’s total listed price.
However, we now know this initial report was either inaccurate, or Amazon has swiftly changed course. An Amazon spokesperson has confirmed to a Washington Post reporter that this feature was never intended for the main Amazon site and was floated as a potential change for the Temu-like Amazon Haul store, saying, “The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store has considered listing import charges on certain products. This was never a consideration for the main Amazon site and nothing has been implemented on any Amazon properties.”

The White House is reacting anyway
The potential action has been strongly condemned, even though it isn’t actually real

Though this change was unconfirmed at press time, that didn’t stop the Trump administration from reacting anyway. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on the report saying “This is a hostile and political act by Amazon,” confirming that she had spoken to the president about these potential changes and then adding that this development “is not a surprise because Amazon has partnered with a Chinese propaganda arm.”
The timing of these price hikes is especially problematic for Amazon, which just confirmed this morning that its summer Prime Day sales event will be happening as originally scheduled this summer on July 1.
