Stelter and Phillip on their election vibes
Phillip: My vibe is like we are on the head of a pin as a country. This election is razor thin—both of the campaigns say that. Are we going to fall this way? Are we going to fall that way? I honestly do not know, there are too many variables at play here. I am a little concerned. We’ve got to keep it together not just next week, but also until January. It’s going to be really difficult.
Stelter: I’m open minded to being surprised. I also think there’s a role for good faith actors in the media and beyond to help be part of the solution. We’ve got to get along next year—we have to find a way to live together. There’s going to be a lot of bad faith actors who are going to make that hard. It’s incumbent on responsible figures in the media to try to make it easier for us to live together next year. That’s the big storyline I want to cover: what does de-escalation look like? What does it mean to de-escalate as a country? But let’s all be open minded to being surprised next week.
