Among the slew of announcements today during the kickoff of CES 2025, AMD has revealed a new collection of CPUs with two new Ryzen 9000 Series chips. This includes the Ryzen 9900X3D and the Ryzen 9950X3D. Both chips are made for desktops, though AMD has also announced new mobile laptop chips as well with the Ryzen 9000HX Series.
AMD‘s CPUs have quickly risen to become the popular choice for many gamers, and AMD’s passion for providing the best possible gaming experience is a big part of why. “Gaming has become one of the biggest forms of entertainment around the world, and with titles becoming more immersive and demanding, having the right hardware and software is critical for the best player experience. Today’s announcements underscore our commitment to providing gamers everywhere the freedom to choose their own gaming experiences without being held back by performance bottle necks,” said Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Group, AMD.
AMD expects the new Ryzen 9000 Series chips to be available in Q1
If you’re looking to get your hands on the bleeding edge of desktop gaming CPUs then you’ll have to wait just a little bit. AMD isn’t launching these new CPUs right away. However, it does say that it expects them to be on store shelves sometime in Q1. So they should show up before the end of March. As long as AMD is able to stick to this timeline.
In terms of specs, the Ryzen 9950X3D has 16 cores and 32 threads. It has a boost frequency of up to 5.7GHz and a base frequency of up to 4.3GHz. It also has a total cache of 144MB, is PCIe Gen5, and has a TDP output of 170W. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 9900X3D has 12 cores and 24 threads. It has slightly lower boost and base frequencies at 5.5GHz and 4.4GHz respectively. Additionally, its total cache is lower at 140MB, and the TDP has an output of 120W. It’s also PCIe Gen5.
AMD hasn’t announced pricing yet, but gamers should expect these chips to cost a significant amount. At least for the first few months.
Systems with Ryzen 9000HX chips are expected in the first half of the year
For AMD’s new mobile chips, laptops using these CPUs are expected to show on store shelves in the first half of this year. That being said, this will really all depend on AMD’s mobile chip partners. There are three chips AMD has announced today as part of this new series. This includes the Ryzen 9 9850HX, Ryzen 9 9955HX, and the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D.
All of these chips should be relatively powerful for computing tasks and amping up gaming tasks. But how well they perform in each won’t be entirely clear until units are in consumer hands. Both 9955HX models have the same range for TDP output of 55W – 75W, while the 9850HX has a slightly lower minimum output of 45W. In terms of core count and thread count, the Ryzen 9 9850HX has the same thread count as the Ryzen 9000X3D at 12 cores and 24 threads. While the Ryzen 9 9955HX and the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D have 16 cores and 32 threads.
For base frequencies, the Ryzen 9850HX has the highest base clock speed at 3.0GHz. However, it has a lower boost clock speed of 5.2GHz at a maximum. The other two chips are set at 2.5GHz and up to 5.4GHz respectively. In addition to these new chips, AMD has also announced two new GPUs based on RDNA 4 with FSR 4. As well as new chips designed for future handhelds.
