Android 16 is the next major version of Android. It will come with a bunch of changes and improvements, as expected from a major update. However, while we can probably expect to see many changes, Google might also be returning some features to their original state. According to a recent report from Android Authority, the Quick Settings feature could revert to an older style for Android 16.
Oldie but goodie
According to Mishaal Rahman over at Android Authority, the Quick Settings could change in Android 16. This is based on what he found in the latest beta of Android 16. Right now, when users open Quick Settings and tap on the tiles, they expand into floating panels that overlay the Quick Settings panel.
However, Android 16 could change that. Google could actually go back to an older design where tapping on the tiles will expand and fill up the entire panel. We get what Google was trying to do with the current version of Quick Settings. By using a floating panel design, it doesn’t feel so intrusive and users can still see what’s behind the panels.
The drawback is that this design gives Google less space to provide relevant and potentially important information for users. Expanding the tiles to cover the entire panel allows Google to include more information and access to additional settings. Long-time Android users are familiar with this design. Older versions of Android included it up to Android 9, when it was removed.
Don’t get your hopes up
According to Rahman’s report, he thinks there’s a chance it might not ship in Android 16. It’s still a work in progress and feels extremely unfinished, based on what Rahman’s seen so far. This means that Google might not have enough time to prepare it for the stable release.
Android 16, unlike older versions of Android, is expected to see an earlier release. Assuming all goes according to plan, the update is scheduled for release in Q2 2025. In the past, Google typically released the next major Android OS update later in the year.
However, starting with Android 16, Google has moved up its timetable. The company says this will give its OEM partners more time to prepare the update for their phones. So, with plans to release Android 16 in Q2, don’t be surprised if Google can’t make it in time to release the new/old Quick Settings menu alongside it.
