Android could get granular customization for the lock screen clock

Google Pixel devices generally offer a solid software experience. However, customization is one area where they have fallen behind the competition. That said, recent findings indicate that Google is finally addressing this issue. For instance, the company is reportedly working on granular controls for the size and shape of Android’s lock screen clock.

Android 14 was already a step forward in customization for Pixel phones. Users could now add app shortcuts to the bottom corners of the screen, as well as choose from up to nine lock screen clock styles. The company’s next step could be to let you tweak them to your liking via new sliders and toggles.

Google is working on new granular controls for Android lock screen clock customization on Pixel phones

Android Authority spotted new under-development options for the Pixel Wallpaper app in the latest Android 15 QPR2 Beta 2. The options allow more granular customization for the Android lock screen clock. There’s only a partial implementation, so the options aren’t available by default. However, the source did manage to enable the customization screen, offering a sneak peek of what we’ll see once Google implements it—if it ever does.

The new customization options will let you change the weight, width, roundness, and tilt of the Android lock screen clock. “Weight” and “Width” are the most granular options, allowing for more levels of adjustment thanks to dedicated sliders. On the other hand, the “Roundness” and “Tilt” options are switches whose effect you can toggle on/off. The latter are not functional yet but are visible in the UI.

You will be able to access these options from a pencil/edit button present on each lock screen clock-style card. However, the button is not yet implemented. This indicates that the new options are still in the early stages of development.

A big step forward compared to the options currently available

For reference, the current Pixel Wallpaper app only offers two options to customize the size of the Android lock screen clock. “Dynamic” enables the clock to auto-resize to fit the content on the screen, while “Small” adds a mini clock to one of the corners of the UI.

There are no details yet on when the new customization options will be available. Additionally, it’s unclear if Google will allow their use across all lock screen clocks or only select ones. Hopefully, there will be more news about this soon.
