Android's photo picker could get its biggest update yet!

Summary: According to a new report, Google has started testing the search feature for Android’s native Photo Picker. Once the support is live, you’ll be able to easily search photos from Photo Picker just like you’d do on Google Photos. The company is yet to roll out the search support to the masses, but there are signs that it should be launched soon.

These days, many use their smartphones as a digital photo library. If you have an Android device, you probably back up most, if not all, of your photos in the Google Photos app. Not to mention, searching through them to find one specific photo can be a daunting task.

This is where Google Photos’ search feature comes in, making it easier to search for that one specific photo. While this function is great and all, it is not available when you browse your Google Photos library through Android’s Photo Picker. However, a new report suggests that the worry will be a thing of the past.

Google has reportedly started testing search support for Android’s native Photo Picker

Last year, Google announced that it would finally add the much-requested local and cloud search support to Android’s native Photo Picker. The company has been working on this for almost a year now. However, it hasn’t shared any further details or screenshots showing the feature. Now, there’s some good news for those waiting.

According to Android Authority, Google has now started testing the search feature for Android’s Photo Picker. In fact, one of their contributors can actually use the feature on their device. We’ve attached the screenshots below for your reference.

As you can see in the images below, the search feature for Android’s Photo Picker works as expected. When you open the Photo Picker, you’ll see a search bar on top of the UI. From there, you can enter your search term and choose the images or videos from the search results.

The mass rollout could begin soon

The outlet further confirms that the search support for Photo Picker has already been enabled in recent Google Play System Updates. Currently, Google Photos hasn’t yet rolled out the search feature in the Photo Picker. This is why most of you aren’t seeing it right now. That said, it’s only a matter of time before it goes live.
